City of Contrasts
Istanbul has everything – from centuries-old mosques and fortresses to ultra-modern glass skyscrapers.
Several religions, peoples and states have left their mark here. You will see the legacy of both the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires.
Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia is truly the most salted place in the world. Even during the Roman Empire, the sanctuary of Artemis was located here. After that, in the time of Byzantium, the Hagia Sophia was laid on the same site.
After the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in the 15th century, the cathedral was turned into the Hagia Sophia Mosque. But the Turks treat the cultural heritage with respect and keep all the icons intact.
Half a century later, the mosque was given the status of a museum, and the icons were returned to the walls of the cathedral. Since 1935, there has been a mosque and a church in this unique place at the same time.
Blue Mosque
The next stop on our route through Istanbul will be the Blue Mosque or, in the original, the Sultanahmet Mosque. You will recognize it from afar: a large central dome surrounded by four smaller ones, as well as as many as six minarets.
This masterpiece was designed by a student of the great architect Sinan – Mehmet Agha Sedefkar.
The name of the Blue Mosque arose due to the blue-blue handmade tiles that decorated the structure. The interior is even more amazing because of the magical lighting from 260 windows!
Hippodrome and Sultanahmet Square
The Constantinople Hippodrome is located on Sultanahmet Square. During the Byzantine period, this area was used as an arena for sports competitions and chariot races. And besides, as a square for meetings and festive processions.
After the arrival of the Ottomans, the hippodrome was destroyed, but impressive sights such as the German Fountain, the obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpent Column remained.
Topkapi Palace and Egyptian Bazaar
Topkapi Palace has been the heart of the Ottoman Empire for centuries. This is the residence of the sultans, which has been completely preserved, and today is a huge museum complex. The palace is very popular with tourists, there is actually a lot of interesting things in it.
It will add a little local flavor and traditions to your trip to the spice bazaar! You will be offered to see, taste and buy a huge number of spices, sweets, herbs and other delicacies. Don't forget about the custom of haggling at the bazaar!
Cruise on the Bosphorus
At the end of a busy day, an hour and a half cruise along the Bosphorus awaits you. This is an opportunity to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery without haste. And also you will have time to make a lot of bright shots!
An excursion to Istanbul from Antalya will be another “vacation on vacation”, because you will have enough impressions, photos and new discoveries for a long time!
