Start your tour outside the Old Fort, Stone Town’s most famous landmark. Get orientated with the city and learn about the flourishing craft culture in Zanzibar before you set off towards your first stop – a local henna painter. Get the opportunity to paint your own pattern onto canvas under the expert guidance of the painter. After you’ve had a practice, you are welcome to try it on your skin too. Next up, stop at a vibrant local studio to chat to a group of local painters, find out more about their work and admire their creations. Carpentry is next on the agenda, still a vital and flourishing vocation in Zanzibar. Under the guidance of a local carpenter, you will also get a chance to carve your own little piece. Be patient though, as this traditional handcraft is not as easy as it looks. You will be given a small souvenir gift by the carpenter to remember your time in Stone Town. Finally, dive into the world of Zanzibar and Swahili music at the local Dhow Countries Music Academy, the only music school in Zanzibar. During your visit, hear about the history of the institution and the different local music styles that they proudly preserve. After your lesson in Tanzanian music history, choose an instrument and throw yourself into the rhythms. Your tour ends here, but before you go, don’t forget to ask for more tips on what else to see and do during your stay in Zanzibar.
